Reece Mastin was born in Scunthorpe, England, to parents Debbie and Darren Mastin.He moved, with his family (parents and three sisters), to Greenwith, South Australia, to escape the dreary weather.Mastin never had any formal musical training and discovered he could sing just by singing along to his favourite songs on the radio.Before entering The X Factor in 2011, Mastin had already recorded his own EP and played in several bands.He attended Golden Grove High School.Following his win on The X Factor, Mastin withdrew from his high school and said he would have a mentor to help him finish Year 12.
